Program Note
In this tragicomedy, 25-year-old slacker David brings new meaning to the idea of being in the doghouse. David is frittering away his time at a Uruguayan seaside town until he can sit for an exam that`s his only ticket to re-earning a lost scholarship in Montevideo. While in the town, with a ridiculously heavy dog population, he sets to work building a house as ordered to by his father. Late in the resort season, the mood is a somber one of things coming to an end, a mood that mirrors David`s desperate, existentially confused state of mind. Nieto`s portrait of generational strife is striking in its simplicity, and hidden beneath the surface are some pointed observations about Uruguay and a soft, spoiled generation raised in the wake of increasing affluence. Nieto`s debut won a VPRO Tiger award at the 2006 International Film Festival Rotterdam.
