Program Note
In [Belle de Jour], Luis Bunuel′s 1967 classic about a woman trying to assert herself emotionally and psychologically, Catherine Deneuve played Severine. A successful doctor′s wife while with him in the evenings, Severine was the exclusive prostitute Belle de Jour during the day. Manoel de Oliveira returns to the characters Bunuel made famous forty years later for this de facto sequel. Now a widow, Severine (played by Bulle Ogier) reluctantly agrees to a dinner date with her one-time obsession Henri (here played by Michel Piccoli) when he promises to reveal a truth that only he can, and answer a four decade-old question. A tense tribute to the master and his writer Jean-Claude Carrière by another.
