In the familiar frame of a coming-of-age story with delicate touches, [Rain Dogs] ls about the harshness of a boy`s journey to becoming an adult. Wai-Tung, who lives with his mother, hears about his brother`s death shortly after he returns home from visiting him in Kuala Lumpur. To overcome his grief, he visits his aunt`s home in the countryside for peace of mind. Nothing happens around Wai-Tung during his stay at his aunt`s. He just follows the routines of his aunt`s family, until he has a brief encounter with Chui and Hui, the sisters of the town. Wai-Tung is unable to understand his brother, nor can he understand his mother`s loneliness. He feels everythings only for a moment; his rage against Chui and her boyfriend cannot last, and his curiosity about his uncle`s gun leads him nowhere. To Wai-Tung, his brother`s death is a happening like a rain shower. Wai-Tung lacks the will to grow up by going through all the obstacles from the reality that he faces. At the end of the film when Wai-Tung returns home and changes a burned-out light bulb from a lamp in living room, you can glimpse a slight change happening in his inner state. Just as a rainbow appears after a rain shower, Wai-Tung will eventually grow up into an adult, although the process may be slow. (Kim Ji-Seok)
