Program Note
[Mainline], a tragic story of mother and daughter co-directed by Rakhshan Bani-Etemad and Mohsen Abdolvahab, is a road movie dealing with serious social issues like drug addiction, which is taboo in Iran. Sara, a future bride, is a drug addict. Without knowing about her addiction, her fiancee Arash, living in Toronto, dreams of a rosy married life. Sara`s mother decides to send her to a rehabilitation center, but their journey is rocking on the road. Bani-Etemad and Abdolvahab work depict the life of a drug addict in a documentary style. The unending, desperate struggles between Sara and her family captured on camera are so lurid that no other interpretation or emotional description of them is needed to understand the harshness of the situations. The directors` smart choice of a simple narrative style and candid camera capture of what is happening actually ls a larger story than what is shown on the screen. Without giving a solution to the problem presented, the film leaves the end unfinished and renders us to ponder. (Kim Ji-Seok)
