Even though [Love Story] is a familiar title, the love story that this film ls is far different from what we usually get. The film tries hard to keep up with the main character`s feelings of desire and lack thereof as he swims against the currents of a dream, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy are blurred. The main protagonist, a novelist, tries to write stories based on his experiences with women but it`s no easy task. He`s no Casanova and the relations that he has with women are fragile and liable to breaking easily. Director Kelvin Tong, who was a film critic, shows a highly self-conscious attitude towards cinematic language. Accordingly, he chooses a novelist who writes about love as his main character, and a stylistic form that questions how the audience members might feel. Even though it`s easy to categorize this film as typical art house fare ? the credits in this film appear 30 minutes into it ? once one gets used to its experimental style, one experiences regular spurts of interest. One thinks this and that thought, watching a film that uses a method, by no means obvious, to describe a desire that is equally unobvious. (Kim Young-jin)
