Program Note
[Kabul Express] pictures forty eight hours of two journalists, who cover Afghanistan and meet various people after 9.11. The movie deals with harsh reality, yet is a comedy. Kabir Khan, a long-time documentary director, presents the situation where cruelty and jocularity stay together, which should have been very familiar to the director himself. This reminds of classic Hollywood comedy movie where Marx Brothers head to the west. However, this movie is able to catch an absurd atmosphere that cannot be laughed at or cried for. The kin gaze of the director at the atmosphere is shown throughout the movie which is tougher than any of the artificial stories. Due to this, the movie delivers a sincere humanity distant from typical humanism that easily concludes the story to comfort the audiences. This movie leads us to an odd experience of watching lots of laughter in brutal reality while freely crossing the genre boundaries of a documentary, a fiction, a comedy and a tragedy. It also lets us overcome the stereotype toward Indian movies.(Kim Young-jin)
