Program Note
The work of Tsai Ming0liang is becoming more and more minimalist while the symbolism becomes more and more profound. In [I Don`t Want to Sleep Alone], he explores the minds of three characters through an extreme use of scant dialogue, and simultaneously makes the general environment more symbolic of the themes. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, migrant worker Rawang finds a homeless, beaten by the hoodlum on the street, and takes him home to care for him. In the meantime, a waitress has to take care of the owner`s vegetable son in the cafe where she works. After he recovers, the homeless meets the waitress by chance and becomes quickly become intimate, which frustrates Rawang. They only things these three share are an old mattress that Rawang once found and dragged home, and an extreme loneliness. The thick smoke and fog suddenly covering the city and the huge abandoned building symbolize their wounds of solitude. Every set has been selected and manufactured under the direction of TSAI, and LEE Kang-Sheng turns in yet another magnificent performance. (Kim Ji-seok)
