Program Note
Documentarian Bernard is in Rwanda, growing increasingly weary of the conflict and disease that afflict the nation. Gentille is a young waitress he meets and falls in love with. Regardless of their differences, they get married just before the Hutu-Tutsi violence of 1994 erupts. Shuffled out of the country as a foreigner, Bernard must wait until order is restored to head back and find the bride he was suddenly separated from. The romance at the center of [A Sunday in Kigali] is fraught with difficulties: he is much older than she; his is privileged; he is white. Favreau avoids the conventions of racially divergent romances, and also opts to present a nuanced interpretation of a complex subject that transcends cliche.
