Program Note
Karole and Gary work in a French nuclear plant. They fall in lust amid violent and dangerous conditions. Two of stumbling blocks to their peaceful affair are her husband Toni, whose aggressive nature is a threat to both, and Gary’s own recklessness. Grand Central is a critical reflection on nuclear power, which has become the main source of energy in our times, and shows the reality of the working conditions and the risks that go on inside nuclear plants. It is more meaningful that the film hails from nuclear powerhouse, France. Love grows like weeds even amid the horrible threat of exposure to radiation. The love story stars beautiful Lea Seydoux and Tahar Rahim, as well as Belgian veteran Olivier Gourmet, and shows off its charm with the contrasting depression in the nuclear plant and the lovers’ night sequences. Rebecca Zlotowski, who won the Louis Delluc award with her first feature Belle Epine, returns with her new film that was introduced in the Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival.
