Program Note
An audition searches for someone to re-create the character of Portugal’s legendary King Afonso. The audition starts off looking for musclemen that will show the King’s bravery. But as it continues, it becomes a search for the body of Portugal by meeting the normal, everyday men of today’s Portugal. The documentary embodies past and present, myth and reality. Director
João Pedro RODRIGUES
Born in Lisbon in 1966. Pedro Rodrigues attended the Lisbon Film School, in which he graduated in 1989. After working as assistant director from 1989 to 1996, he made his own short films. His first feature O Fantasma premiered in Venice in 2000. In 2005, Odete was invited to Cannes 2005, Director′s Fortnight.
