The film depicts a long process of a family’s conflicts and separation. Ahmad, who has been separated from his wife for four years, returns to Paris from Iran to divorce her. Meanwhile, Marie is in a relationship with Samir. Samir’s wife, who tried to take her own life, has been in a coma for a long time. Under these circumstances, Marie’s teenage daughter Lucie doesn’t like her mother’s relationship with Samir. As it is revealed that a surprisingly great number of people were involved in Samir’s wife’s attempt to kill herself, the relationship between Marie and Samir takes a new turn. Consequently, Ahmad finds himself at the center of the conflict between his wife and daughter and that between his wife and her partner. Ashgar Farhadi reveals the characters’ secrets one by one, just like peeling an onion. Everyone has a secret that has never been told and as each secret is revealed, they realize the cause of their conflict. Each time a secret is revealed, the audience sees the characters from a different perspective. It seems that such a way of storytelling has become Ashgar Farhadi’s trademark. (KIM Ji-Seok)
