Program Note
In retrospect, journalist Fujii Shuichi can pinpoint the single moment on the single day that changed his life forever. He receives a letter from a death row inmate, Junji Sudo, confessing to three murders in addition to the crimes that got him convicted and asking Fujii to investigate the case. The mysterious inmate claims to be seeking revenge on his former gang boss, known simply as The Teacher. Initially The Devil’s Path follows the journalist as he looks into the inmate’s testimony, eventually focusing on detailed reproductions of Sudo’s grisly crimes, including rape, torture, arson and murder by mutilation and live burial, but then it take an ironic turn. As Fujii’s fixation drags him farther and farther away from his life and humanity as he looks into the abyss of evil, Sudo gradually regains his sense of life while awaiting his punishment. Based on a true story, Shiraishi Kazuya’s sophomore effort is loaded with grim omens that are often more horrendous than real crimes.
