In line with his previous work Walker, Tsai Ming Liang proves to be evolving with his filmmaking style that he uses images to develop a story in his latest film Stray Dogs. He did his own production design in this film in pursuit of his style. The film introduces a homeless family. The father is a human billboard advertising luxurious apartments. Children roam grocery markets in order to survive off free food samples. They do not have a home. But they manage to survive. Mother works at a grocery store but she keeps distance from her family. The city has become a giant dumpster to the family but they cannot leave. In terms of acting performance, director shows faith to and depends on actors/actresses. The last state-of-the-art scene where Chen Shiang-chyi and Lee Kang Sheng look at the collapsing wall would not have possibly been created if the director was not committed to them. Interestingly, director had three actresses Yang Kuei-mei, Lu Yi Ching, and Chen Shiang Chyi to play the mother. Yang Kuei-mei, though she shows up only in the prologue, stands out with her brief but impressive existance. (KIM Ji-Seok)
