Program Note
Dreamland is a story about a wealthy pregnant woman, a social worker, a divorced man, and a widow on Christmas Eve. A young prostitute, the common denominator among them, is sacrificed to the hopes and desires of their relationships. Unfolding between Christmas Eve and the next morning, Dreamland showcases the dark side of Zurich, one of the richest cities in the world. The city looks calm and orderly on the surface, but it is gloomy and dismal inside, ready to explode any minute, ahead of one of the biggest holidays on Earth. The most impressive character is the foreign prostitute. She is the only person who communicates both with lonely singles and problematic couples that run parallel to each other and yet never seem to meet. Later, alienated by the vanity and pretense of the middle class, she is forced to seek forgiveness like a Christmas sacrifice for the sake of everybody else’s peace, which may last only till next holiday season.
