Program Note
A forgotten platoon from the Foreign Legion, abandoned somewhere in the Gulf of Djbouti. The remains of a ghost armed force which plays war games and repairs the roads. In Marseilles, the ex-warrant officer Galoup recalls the good times of this well-orchestrated life, his men and his flock. But in the end what he has really lost is his commanding officer. His commanding officer who Galoup did not want to share with a young legionaire. Because I know the place the Foreign Legion occupies at Djbouti, and also because I have always been struck by the idea of absolutism and the extreme needs that the Legion instills on its men, I have tried to make the umpteenth adaptation of Billy Budd, Sailor with the action in Djbouti. Two poems by Herman Melville have been fundamental in this work: "The Night March"and "Gold in the Mountain."(Claire Denis)
