Program Note

Kombi is a poverty-stricken city dominated by an emperor who is Master of the World. In order to bring back prosperity, the emperor′s priests want to make a traditional human sacrifice, in which the people no longer believe. Sia has been designated. Mamadi, her fiance, rebels when he hears the priests′ decision and succeeds in stopping the sacrifice. A change in power occurs but the system remains. Sia is well aware of it, since the priests raped her. She listens to Kerfa, a crazy old man whose words are wise but rebellious. Against all expectations, instead of accepting the crown offered by her fiance, the new master of the city, she leaves the town as Kerfa did before her and will spread words of peace and justice on her journeys.

Director

Dani Kouyate

Born in 1961, Dani Kouyate ′ obtained a B.A. in film creation from the African Institute of Film Studies and continued his studies in Paris, leaving the Sorbonne with an M.Phil. He is also a graduate of the International School of Anthropology in Paris. He has directed several short films including Bilakoro(1989), Gamidon(1990), Tobere Kosam(1991), and Les larmes sacr ′ ees du crocodile(1995). He made his feature debut with Keua, l ′ heriitage du griot(1995). SIA, Le Reve du Python is his second feature film.
