Program Note
‘Satyagraha’ is the philosophy of nonviolent resistance that was created by Mahatma Gandhi. It means “insistence on truth” in Hindi, but Gandhi used the movement to protest against injustice and oppression. The film reinterprets this protest as an attempt to criticize and reform the corrupt power structure of today’s India. Retired educator Dwakra Anand lives a life without compromise in the small Indian village of Ambikapur, ceaselessly criticizing a corrupted Indian society filled with greed. One day, his son Akilesh, who collaborated on a government urban development project, dies in an accident. For arguing with a local government official over the compensation for his son’s death, Dwakra is thrown into prison. Manabe, Akilesh’s friend, starts a media movement to gain his release, and this movement snowballs into a modern ‘Satyagraha’ against the government. However, rather than relying on the mechanics of a romantic epic wherein the corrupt power class is punished, the film focuses on peace and truth, which are at the heart of ‘Satyagraha’, reminding the audience again that for those seeking truth, the process toward it is as important as its result.
