Program Note
Set in the majestic landscape of the Himalayas, Samsara tells an epic tale of a spiritual quest. Tashi is a brilliant young Buddhist monk who is just completing three years of solitary meditation in a remote hermitage. While performing a routine harvest blessing, he becomes irresistibly attracted to the farmer′s beautiful daughter, Pema. Arguing that one can renounce worldly existence only after experiencing it, Tashi leaves the monastery. At first, everyday life is an endless sequence of joy and wonder. He marries Pema and together they discover the bliss of sexual union and the joys- and sorrows- of possession. Most importantly, Pema reveals spiritual facets of herself that constantly surprise and challenge him. But Tashi is unprepared for other aspects of everyday life. When a fire nearly destroys everything he and Pema own, Tashi realizes that wordly life is far more complex than he ever imagined.
