Program Note
In 1999, a young man reveals a deadly dagger at a campaign site of a female politician in Mumbai. The 19-year old guitarist wants revenge upon the politician who had terrorized his father. In Goa, the best man catches the bride’s eye at his friend’s wedding in 2010. This groomsman makes up his mind to stop the wedding, as he believes he is the one who truly loves the bride. These two incidents happened at different times in different places and have no relation of whatsoever. Except that the two men have the same name, David. David is a film that juxtaposes the lives of the two men with the same name, scene by scene, in parallel. In most cases, films of this form prepare a joint point, but this one doesn’t. The vain love commotion of the 30-year old heavy drinker is made into a romantic comedy with some musical sequences, and the 19-year old’s revenge play is depicted as a political thriller with action. As a result, you will feel as if you are watching two separate movies. Commercial films of India do have this aspect of a gift set. (KANG Sowon)
