Program Note
Soul is the third feature film by Chung Mong-Hong, an emerging Taiwanese director in the international film festival community. This suspense thriller tells the devastating story of a father and his son based on a remote house on a mountain. One day, A-Chun, while working as a cook at a Japanese restaurant, collapses and gets returned back to his hometown to stay with his father and sister. Experiencing some kind of disassociation, he doesn’t recognize his family and kills his sister. His father confines him, but the killing doesn’t stop. In a series of murders a tragic history of the family is revealed, while the son is unable to find a way to communicate his being trapped in the past. A kungfu star Jimmy Wong, best known for his film series in 1960s and 70s One-armed Swordsman, plays the role of the cold and stubborn father, and one of the most talented actors in Taiwan, Joseph Chang plays the role of the son. With these actors’ great performances, this film gives the essence of new Taiwanese cinema being diverse in genres and rich in creativity. (KANG Naeyoung)
