Program Note
This omnibus film was directed by four upcoming Taiwanese directors with each partner director from South Korea, France, Chile and Iran. Not knowing each other previously, these young directors get together in Taipei to collaborate overcoming the cultural and lingual barrier. The Pig is about two outsiders struggling for their own existence. When everything seems to be in or for metempsychosis, their long awaited rain in the drought would come in the end. Silent Asylum is rather an experimental short about Asia’s two tragic incidents; the genocide by Myanmarese military regime and the nuclear bombing in Hiroshima. The film asks what we could do in front of the living eyewitnesses and the dead site. A Nice Travel depicts superficial relationships of a young Taiwanese woman who is preparing for an immigration to Chile. The floating camera’s feeling of absence in any actual relationship is well blended into the film. Mr. Chang’s New Address is the most interesting short film about a middle aged man whose house magically disappeared one day. It is quite arousing to try to figure out what we are missing or losing even in the ordinary looking day. (PARK Sungho)
