Actor Ha Jung-woo’s first film as director is a superfluous comedy revolving around an airplane carrying a Korean movie star, a business tycoon, a paparazzi and a monk failing to land during a storm, causing a commotion between the flight attendants and passengers. Characters rattle off their lines without pause and you can barely take a breath while the lines are exchanged back and forth. The situation itself is also superfluous. The pilot smokes nonchalantly at the cockpit, the crew is busy talking behind the passengers’ backs, and the characters are all somewhat off the beat: the monk tries to convince the Korean star to become a vegetarian, the business tycoon’s secretary is busy bossing everyone around, and a random woman wants the Korean star to give her an autograph using the phrase, “I want you.” It’s not easy to make this type of a comedy well, but Fasten Your Seatbelt’s energy goes over the top and Director Ha is able to draw out laughs. If humor really is a defense mechanism against fear, Fasten Your Seatbelt is doing its job. We can’t stop laughing when people start doing crazy things with their lives in danger. (NAM Dong-chul)
