Program Note
A crime is committed in Paris and the police have no leads. Given the complexities of the investigation, the authorities call upon a man with supernatural powers: the sorceror Simon Magus, a foreigner. He comes from the East and has wandered from town to town for many years. After helping the police find the murderer, he is challenged by a former rival, another sorcerer, to a contest: the two men must be buried for three days. Simon, a pessimistic, introverted medium, accepts the challenge which would seem to require a Houdini-like masterstroke. But when he′s unearthed, he appears to be lifeless, and remains in his tomb. Jeanne is a young girl in a hurry to find the man she loves. She knows almost nothing about his life, simply that his name is Simon. In the freezing night, a fine crack appears in the ground. Simon the magus is now dead. Will his soul make their meeting?
