Program Note
Leila is an adventurous and independent young woman who has never experienced love. And she wouldn′t have it any other way. She′s happy with her porn and casual, quasi-anonymous sexual trysts. She′s occupied by her cousin Rachel′s impending wedding, and anxious about her parents′ disintegrating marriage. And then she meets David. David is protective and emotional, and looking for something in Leila that reaches beyond sex. In this unfamiliar emotional terrain, Leila lashes out at David and is forced to look inward to explore her own vulnerabilities, and discover a new source of strength and surety in herself. Wading back into his regular thematic terrain of love and redemption, Virgo adapts fiancée Tamara Faith Berger′s explicit novel into a thoughtful film about a woman′s personal growth. Stunning cinematography by Barry Stone gives the film a tangible feeling of the summer time moving forward, and makes the characters appear to emerge from a heated background. Lie with Me marks a significant leap in the level of filmmaking and storytelling that Virgo is working at.
