Program Note
Claire Denis has commented on the fact that her films are often referred to as choreographic, and so it is fitting that Mathilde Monnier is the subject of Denis′s latest documentary. A choreographer and director at the Centre Choreographique National de Montpellier, Monnier is among the most critically acclaimed and respected choreographers in France, if not from across the globe. Denis and Monnier met at a dance festival in Montpellier, and entered into a hesitant collaboration shortly after that. The largely Super-8 film is built upon Monnier′s rehearsals, and the work of camera operators Agnés Godard and Hélène Louvart add a tactile quality to the film that increases its intimate study of the body, movement and space. The rehearsals are filmed without music, and the final piece is never shown in its entirety, much of the music heard in the film is that of singer-songwriter P.J. Harvey-at Denis′s request. Spare and austere like the dancer′s own work, Towards Mathilde is an almost perfect blend of two seemingly contrary art forms, coming together as one seamless piece.
