Program Note
Ivan is a regenerator, a Bulgarian man whose job it is to rename and issue new identity papers to Turkish Bulgarians. His job brings him into contact with schoolteacher Ayten, who is on a mission to steal the official name seals in an attempt to halt the genocide. Ivan is drawn to Ayten, and he must decide between discharging his duties by regenerating her, or disobeying orders and facing the consequences. Later, when Ivan is involved in a police action that results in the death of Ayten′s child, his shock and her sorrow land them both in the same hospital. Still drawn to each other, they′re faced with a difficult, potentially unacceptable decision. Recalling Romeo and Juliet, Stolen Eyes confronts the issue of a relationship that crosses ethnic, political and social boundaries and places two fundamentally opposed people together on the dividing line. This story is specific to Bulgaria and Turkey, but is relevant to any of the places in the world-the Middle East, Ireland, the inner cities, Eastern Europe-where friends and lovers are forced apart by ideology.
