Program Note
In the timely Queens, six sons, five mothers and one father are readying themselves for Spain′s first gay marriages. Manuel Gómez Pereira′s comedy comes just ahead of Spanish legislation that will likely pass-and following the legalizing of gay marriage in several jurisdictions around the world. The queens of the film aren′t the sons-they′re the domineering mothers that must confront their own desires, prejudices and fears that come to the fore because of the weddings. Argentinean Ofelia wants to move in with her son and future son-in-law, causing a rift between the men: Magda has exploited her son′s sexuality for financial gain; Nuria has a carnal encounter with her soon to be son-in-law on the way to his wedding; Helena is the judge who will preside over the weddings, including her son′s, though she has a problem with gays; wealthy Reyes is resistant to her son marrying below him-an idea shared by the fiancé′s working-class father. A funny and moving look at family and real love, starring Spanish screen superstars Carmen Maura, Norma Aleandro, Marisa Paredes and others.
