In Dogville, Lars Von Trier put Grace, an innocent woman with the best of intentions, into a town where she was stripped of her power and dignity by corrupt human nature. Her power came roaring back when she imposed a judgement and exacted a bitter revenge on those who wronged her. Now in Manderlay, Grace has moved to Alabama, where she comes upon an estate where slavery is still practiced. Indignant, she takes over in order to help the slaves overcome their history. Tragedy, misunderstanding, and ignorant arrogance combine to force Grace into a position that she had not expect to find herself in, and the story comes full circle. The second in Von Trier′s projected ′USA Trilogy′ sees him exploring explosive themes of ideological imposition, social preparedness for sweeping change, and race.
