"Don′t you ever think about the day when things will start to go wrong?" Lemming is about that day. Alain and his wife Benedicte relocate for work. They are the perfect modern couple. On the evening they invite Alain′s new boss and his wife for dinner, Alice and Richard, they get a first hand taste of how things go wrong. Alice and Richard are bitter and hateful-the opposite of them. Dinner is a disaster, and the evening reaches its unpleasant zenith when a dead lemming is found in a drainpipe. Lemming is about the hidden fears, desires, dreams and fantasies the lurk beneath the surface and can impress themselves on us at any time, like the titular animal. The pervading tone of dread and the constant influence of the past make the film over into a non superatural supernatural thriller, and the repeated switching form Alain′s point of view to Benedicte′s keeps the viewer as unbalanced as the characters are. Charlotte Rampling and Charlotte Gainsbourg shine as the eerily complimentary women whose relationship to each other borders on possessive.
