Program Note
Anna is married with a young son-the picture of happiness. Her career as an irrigation specialist takes her around the world, and while in Egypt, she discovers the body of a woman colleague who has committed suicide. Like Anna, the woman seemed happy, and her husband has no idea why she killed herself. When Anna returns home, she doesn′t tell anyone about the incident, and proceeds to carefully watch her own family, looking for clues, wondering if there′s something she′ s missing, something just beneath the surface that is unseen. Matters are complicated by the fact that Anna′s sister was once her husband′s lover, and the women′s widower father selling the family home and moving to Guernsey. Director Nanouk Leopold explores ideas of distance between people that should not have distances between them, and how we get out of sync with one another, particularly loved ones. The story is told largely through beautifully photographed images that illustrate that disjointedness.
