Program Note
In the five years between 1986 and 1991, Argentina boasted a population of over 20,000 Koreans living in the country. Director Bae Youn-suk was on of those 20,000-born in Seoul and relocating to Buenos Aires when he was 12-in 1986. Bae refers to himself and others like him as a 1.5-generation kid-not quite first, but definitely not as entrenched as second. The difficulties, limitations and feelings of otherness felt by the Korean immigrants to Argentina is represented by the four young men in Bae′s film debut, as are the conflicts and pressures within the Korean community itself that the boys experience in their day-to-day lives. The director believes those conflicts are also a factor in the boys′ striking out against society, as well as adding to their confusion and frustration. In the grand tradition of independent film, Do U Cry 4 Me Argentina? was shot digitally with the assistance of Bae′s family and friends. The result is an indefinable comedy drama musical documentary about hope and dreams, unlike anything Argentine cinema has ever seen.
