The Child is another enormously moving and sensitively observed morality tale from the directors of The Promise and The Son. The Dardennes maintain their interest in people living, or simply surviving, in harsh, often mercenary conditions. Jeremie Renier (who turned in a searing performance in The Son) plays Bruno, a 20-year-old with an aversion to responsibility and a young girlfriend, Sonia. Their lives are indelibly affected by the birth of their son; both are unprepared for the duties of parenthood, and it′s hard to determine who the titular child really is. Seeing monetary value in the baby, Bruno sells him-and sends Sonia into shock. Vowing to correct his grave error, Bruno sets out to undo the deed, and what follows is a rich study in greed, right, wrong, and morality that leads to a devastatingly moving finale. Those familiar with the Dardennes work will relish the film′s intimate realism, and newcomers will be pulled in by the intensely realized drama of human emotion.
