Program Note
In 1950, in the thick of the Korean War, Smith, a UN soldier who crash-lands in Dongmakgol, the North Korean Company Commander Lee Soo-hwa and his group who have fallen back, and the party of Pyo Hyun-cheol, a South Korean soldier who has deserted his troop, all coincidentally encounter one another at Dongmakgol. The subject matter of Welcome To Dongmakgol, the biggest box office hit this year, is the division of the nation, the most tormenting experience in Korean modern history. This film presents the exquisite combination between the serious political situation of war and division and the light sense of humor of the witty dialogues and irrelevances, which make it unique among other popular movies. This combination moves the Korean audience with its fairy tale-like imagination and innocent humanism. Even the protagonists′ death in the last scene, which is supposed to be the most tragic, is decorated with the pure mind of a child enjoying fireworks This film suggests a new standard of popular movies to Korean audiences, who are used to tragic and even self-torturous endings.
