Program Note
A story about a low-life and a widow with a son falling in love would seem too conventional. Yet director Johnnie To succeeds in transforming mannerisms into a delightful drama by presenting the characters in the most attractive way. Likewise, Where a Good Man Goes focuses on the characters rather than the storyline. Michael, who has just been released from prison, is determined to get his money back from his ex-wife and men. However his plan is deterred when he starts feeling compassion for Judy, owner of the run-down hotel where he stays, and Judy′s son, Tony. Michael, a rough and blunt character on the outside but truly a man with a kind heart, meets with various difficult situations in his quest to help Judy. Unlike most of the heros that appear in Hong Kong films of the 80′s and 90′s, Michael settles down in the end, not in Hong Kong but in Macao. He rejects the pessimism and despair that haunted his predecessors. And although he is surrounded by betrayal and conspiracy, he perseveres with forgiveness. What Michael wants isn′t revenge but a family. In this light, a story of a tragic hero finding happiness seems to carry special meaning for director Johnny To. The film′s epilogue, with Michael released from prison and walking along the prison wall seems to suggest To′s farewell to the tragic heroes of his past. (Kim Ji-Seok)
