Program Note
In the late Chosun dynasty, counterfeits were circulating around. Detective Ahn of West Security Station and a passionate newcomer, Nam-sun try to trace the source of the counterfeiting. They chase the Secretary of National Security and his man ′Sad Eye′ as suspects. A predestined battle between the best woman detective in Chosun, Nam-sun, and a mysterious assassin Sad Eye unfolds. The self-completed story is not the interest of this film. As a film maniac, Lee Myung-se made Duelist full of his cinematic memories, as with his previous films. This film is literally a ′motion picture of characters′ movements. The struggle for the coin bag in the opening part between detective Ahn and a crowd of people is similar to the vigorous actions of American football players, and the duel between ′Sad Eye and Nam-soon is beautifully choreographed, like a musical dance number. From time to time, the audience might enjoy some humorous scenes as if they are watching an 18-frame silent film. A magnificent chivalric film showing Lee′s great talent as a stylist

Director
Lee Myung-Sae
Lee Myung-Se began his film career as Bae Chang-Ho′s assistant director before making his feature debut in 1988 with Gagman. Gagman is acclaimed as a unique debut feature in Korean cinematic history with its film maniac sensitivity and dreamy style. Since My Love, My Bride (1990), First Love (1993), Affliction Of Man (1995), Their Last Love Affair (1996) and Nowhere To Hide (1999), he has become known for his stylish direction.
