Program Note
Tang is a night show drag queen in Beijing, busy dancing and singing in his sexy costumes and suggestive make-up nightly at clubs or exclusive restaurant stages. But doing the job causes Tang a great deal of confusion about his sexual identity. One day Tang meets a lesbian couple, Xun and Lily. When Tang loses a male friend who might have been a lover, Tang repeatedly goes to the women for comfort following his hurt; they become friends. And when Xun and Lily break up, she and Tang are left to share their loneliness, and spontaneously move in together. The problem is roles. Xun requires Tang to fulfill the woman′s role of doing housework and handling domestic affairs, and Tang complies with her request easily. Living with Xun causes Tang to realize the true gender hidden deep inside him. The film adopts very unique narrative form and is framed like a documentary. The invisible space over the camera ceaselessly aroused by an interviewer′s voice and the use of hand-held camera takes off the mask at the final great reversal. (Lee Wang-joo)
