Program Note
The film is set in a traditional market in Jakarta, which is flooded by goods and people but, in fact, dominated by a feeling of loss. The three siblings, Seno, Bimo, and Asih, have lost their mother, while Rindu has been adopted after losing her parents from a fire. Another child has been estranged from his father, and the town′s temple has lost its dome. Rindu tells a deliberately staged fairy tale of all the people in the market cooperating to overcome their own losses. The soft-tinted lighting and sets increase the atmosphere of the fairy-tale play. Focusing on every single person in the market as the leading character, the director captures the trivial yet touching episodes of every person in every corner of the market, rendering wisdom, sorrow, and laughter. He deals with the contemporary issues of Indonesian society such as poverty, religious disputes, isolation, and the people suffering from all of these problems, yet suggests hopes for a bright future.
