Program Note
Even today, many films are inspired by the subjects of city nightlife and taxicabs. Midnight My Love is a love story that was made by the new melding of a familiar subject with urban sensitivity. But is a taxi driver working the night shift in Bangkok. He enjoys listening to old songs on the radio and likes soap operas, often imagining that he′s the male protagonist. One day, the prostitute Nuan gets into But′s taxi, instantly feeling sympathy and love for but, a simple man of few words. However, as they gradually grow closer to each other, the love in the city isn′t as romantic as it is in the radio dramas. These two emotionally scarred people fall to the ground unable to escape the inhumane situations of the city. Like in the letter sent by But to the radio program DJ, can a person′s goodness and love continue on? Director Kongdej Jaturanrasmee realistically and softly portrays, at times creating poetic moments, the story of these two people who could be found in any other city. Told in a commercial narrative, this film has amazing appeal, playing out like the child of a marriage between Peter Chan′s Comrades, Almost A Love Story and Lee Chang-dong′s Oasis. Petchtai Wongkamlao, Thailand′s most famous comedian, who starred alongside Tony Jaa in Ong Bok, shows a different side with his performance in this film. (Kwon Yong-min)
