Program Note

A superstar reporter at a Nanjing newspaper, Gu seems to have it all, but his whole universe starts falling apart after Yang begs Gu for public kudos in the newspaper for saving a university coed from rape. This is Yang’s desperate attempt to show his ailing father, a national labor model with many diplomas and awards, his own public kudos. Things get complicated after Gu befriends the alleged rape victim, who begs Gu not to publish the story. Gu must reexamine his values, job, and relationship with his long-time girlfriend.

Jian xin Huang

Widely regarded as an icon of the 5th Generation Chinese directors, Jian Xin Huang, a graduate of the Beijing Film Institute, is noted for his sharp social criticism mixed with a touch of black humor. His groundbreaking directorial debut was [The Black Cannon Incident](1986), which won the Best Film Award at the 6th Golden Rooster Awards. His other films include [Back to Back, Face to Fac](1994) and [Surveillance](1997), which was part of the official selection at the 47th Berlin Film Festival. Huang is the president of the China Film Director Association.
