Program Note
On the Edge is a beautifully etched Irish drama about a young man who conceals his adolescent pain behind a mordant sense of humor and a bent for self-destruction. After a near-fatal accident in a stolen car, 19-year-old Jonathan Breech is given two choices- prison or a psychiatric hospital. He begrudgingly accepts the latter, though he is skeptical about therapy, which brings him into conflict with the hospital′s resident psychiatrist, Dr. Figure. Jonathan′s condition, a manageable case of inherited depression, stands in stark contrast to the other more troubled patients. He befriends Toby, a sensitive, tormented young man who blames himself for his brother′s accidental death. Jonathan and Toby forge a complicated friendship that mirrors the problems they had with their individual siblings. But their friendship also develops into a rivalry when Jonathan falls for the self-destructive Rachel. Eventually, with Dr. Figure′s help, Jonathan begins to confront his demons.
