Program Note
Agne runs the farm he inherited from his father, but it’s not easy to do alone. To make matters worse, the land’s owner threatens to end the lease. Agne desperately wants to save the farm so that his son can take it on, but his son’s interests lie elsewhere. As the situation gets worse, he is forced to take extreme action. Ravens focuses on the despairing breadwinner of a family on an isolated farm, and simultaneously explores his curious son’s future, a son interested in birds and photography. Despite the dismal mood created through toned-down colors, this film emphasizes the hope about the possibilities available to young people. With the conflict between father and son about the succession of family business being a subject that transcends time and space, this film is bound to evoke sympathy from many. Adapted from a novel by Tomas Bannerhed, Ravens is Jens Assur’s first feature film, which is marked by beautiful imagery of people in bleak fields and elaborately composed scenes. (RHEE Souewon)
