Program Note
Yoel is a historian who is in a lawsuit against an influential Austrian family in the village of Rahnsdorf since the family is planning a real-estate development on a Jewish massacre site. Yoel assumes the real purpose of the plan is to bury the massacre for good, but he hasn’t been able to find proof yet. While carrying out his research, he manages to access to testaments from Holocaust survivors, and happens to see his mother’s. Surprisingly, he realizes his mother might have counterfeited her identity as a Jew. Taking the risk of losing his own identity as well, he continues to dig up the truth. Jews suffered and sacrificed just because of their identity, and the film asks who the real Jews are and are not. As a contemplation of religion and humanism, The Testament was screened at the International Critics’ Week, Venice International Film Festival. (RHEE Souewon)
