Program Note
In a factory in Portugal, workers suspect that they might lose their jobs when they find the machines are relocated under cover of darkness. Conflicts arise between the workers and management, which leaves the factory half empty and with a new vision at the same time. Based on the economic crisis of 2008 that has put many lives at risk in Europe ever since, this film is inspired by the real story between the workers and the management in an elevator factory in Portugal. The director demonstrates his documentary style by sketching out the dreary scenery of the factory, showing portraits of people whose identity is the labor itself, and taking interviews as well. The film has a discussion about the nature of capitalism with an Italian professor, which leads to critical contemplation about mechanization and the human being’s labor. It also broaches the issues about the rules of market, barbarization carried by machines and capital. When it talks about the value that can be created only by human beings, it glows with consideration about things that don’t change in a changing paradigm. (RHEE Souewon)
