Program Note
The body of an unidentified woman hidden by the militia is found in a remote morgue. An elderly caretaker, a gravedigger, a woman looking for her missing daughter, and a wounded hearse driver are here. They decide to give her a proper burial. Set in somewhere in South America, Oblivion Verses is an outstanding visual sermon about respecting death and resisting being forgotten. The camera follows the old man as he obstinately fights to keep the government from burying young men in a sea of oblivion. The film is a severe social criticism expressed through superb sensibility rather than realism. The fantastic whales mourning the death of their friend, the slight movements of the old man having dodged bullets by luck, and the scene of the labyrinthine warehouse filled with records of the deceased indicate that Alireza Khatami is someone to watch for in the future. Respect for the stories of each deceased turns to interest in life during the second half of the film, pointing to hope for humanity. (RHEE Souewon)
