Program Note
Brussels, summer of 1942 during Nazi regime. Joseph Miller is arrested by the Germans during his trip to the zoo with his son Simon. Simon manages to escape, and aided by the resistance is sent to England, where is grandfather, Abraham, is. Never having liked Joseph, Abraham is cold towards his grandson, who tries his utmost to be liked. Meanwhile, Simon hears that his father was evacuated to Poland and rejects the existence of God, but Abraham claims that God is a friend of the Jewish and would never forsake them. Strong in its theme, the movie presents Jewish persecution and religion from the perspective of a boy ? a fresh way to view Nazism. The story starts with the narration of a young voice, and goes back and forth between past and present. It includes real cuts from the 1940s to add realism. The way it incorporates the religious theme of resurrection and the question of whether the father will come back alive will keep audiences intrigued. (RHEE Souewon)
