Program Note
The camera covers laborers leaving a factory. Twenty-year-old Eva fails to renew her contract and leaves Bucharest for Italy. She is put up by Anna, who works at the FIAT factory, and takes care of her grandmother. Meanwhile, Eva starts to shadow a middle-aged woman. With its exceptional lineup and mise en scene, this remarkable first film deeply explores Europe’s illegal immigration and labor problems. The ’interruptions’ between the scenes and the repeated fragmentation of the body create a feeling of distance. And its repetition interrupts immersion into the narrative and leads to form recognition. While they live in different areas, Eastern vs. Western Europe, the two young women share a common fate ? the plot revolves around them with continued variation to tell the story of a new generation ’similar, yet different’. This year’s new Italian director puts out this movie not to be missed, which was also shown at the Venice Film Festival Internatioal Critics’ Week. (RHEE Soue-won)
