Program Note
Mijail, Feodor and their cow Mushka are swept away by a flood and wash up in a coastal village. They survive by picking up debris carried in by the sea, and one day find the body of a German soldier. The German government is on the lookout for the missing soldier and an American submarine keeps a watchful eye. Through the two dumb-witted brothers, this comedy pokes fun at ideology and war. It follows the perspective of two adults who fully retain their childhood memories, thus making it seem like a fairy tale. Take for instance, Mijail continues to love Mushka the cow, and Feodor continues to hold on to Loli, his first love. Meanwhile, their past is presented through an animation scene in the beginning and recollection scenes throughout. The robust music carries the rhythm and flair of the whole movie. The hilarious speculations by the German and US armies, and subsequent events criticize war and points a finger at the Franco Spanish. It is the first feature from a director full of personality and promise. (RHEE Souewon)
