Program Note
The film begins with Sarit′da, a man in his 30s, who decides that he has had enough of urban terrorism′, namely urban noise. His over-sensitivity to the noises of the city makes the audience rethink how psychologically damaging urban noise is. His decision to move to the countryside seems only natural. However, director Jahar Kanungo goes one step further. He questions if Sarit′ da who′s satisfied with the peaceful silence of a Bengal country village and even meets the woman of his dreams-is really a victim of the alleged ′urban terrorism. Sarit′da starts to have difficulties communicating with other people. In fact, his problem is not only his over-sensitivity to the urban noises, but to all kinds of sounds including the human voice. This forces him to reject communication with other people, and eventually he decides to get his ears covered up once and for all. The ironic twists in the film let us contemplate communication between people, leading us to realize that our problem with living in modern society is that we are losing the knowledge of how to communicate with others.
