Program Note
Han-soo, a 12th grade student, is an eminent swimmer. After his widowed mother fell into a coma, he lost his desire for anything. Quitting swimming and school, he only wants to stay with his mother all the time. One day, two women who are having a hard time, become a part of Han soo′s life. One of them is a college woman, Mi-jin, who takes care of her unconscious mother lying next to his mother, and the other is In-hee, the music teacher, who has just moved in to his neighborhood. The lack of a father figure is unusually frequent in Korean cinema. In Peter Pan Formula, this set up is not the simple background but the main trunk of narrative which the protagonist must go through. Mother is not the embodiment of the great motherhood but the absolutely intimate body for the boy who has never seen his father. The boy caresses the withering body of his mother. When two women who are totally different from each other interrupt this oedipal relationship, the boy′s desire cracks. This is an excellent film which lyrically but cruelly describes the growing pains of an introverted boy who wanders among the mother′s disappearance, the father′s absence, and the appearance of the unknown women.
