Program Note
SSunday Seoul is a film with three nonsensical episodes. A high school student Do-youn who is the victim of bullying in school is the main character of the first episode. He is ugly and bad at studying. What is worse, he cannot fight either. One day, an unexpected change happens to his body. Set in the quiet residential street of the suburbs, the second episode is the story of a sera killer. The youth who resolved to avenge his father′s death and the genius martial arts girl who falls in love with him appear in the third episode. This film has no obsession for the meaningful allegory or the truth of narrative. All of these three episodes are the salty gossip easily found in the tabloids or the obscene weekly magazines, and all of the characters are exaggerated as if in comic books. (SSunday Seoul, was one of the top selling obscene weekly magazines in Korea.) Now that we live in a time when the B movie is accepted as one of the sophisticated intellectual plays, SSunday Seoul pleasantly unfolds a bundle of these believe it or not stories mixing the genres of horror, chivalry, thriller, SF, and comedy with a bit of kitschy sentiment thrown in. This boldly straightforward movie is full of provocative pleasures and fresh vitality which is hardly found in the previous Korean genre films that have been captivated by the spell of the truth.
